Surviving a Power Outage - Hotel Adventures

The power went out at the hotel around 4am this morning. The only reason I woke up was my CPAP shut off. I can still breathe but it's a bit jarring when the airflow suddenly drops.

Soon, the call of Nature came thru. The bathroom is only a few steps aways but, without the nightlight, it's pitch black in there.

My only guiding light was the annoying green blinking light from the smoke detector - but it had no rhyme or rhythm and could not be trusted. I had to find the flashlight or my phone to safely make my way through the darkness without stubbing a toe or two.

By the time I made it back to bed, sleep had eluded me.

Per a web-search "is the power out in my area", I see there's a wide-spread outage in Miami-Dade county and several other Florida counties but no restoration timeframe yet.

In my camper van, I use a Jackery and a RockPals (portable power banks that I charge up via solar or electric). When staying at a hotel, I bring them into the room rather than leave them unattended in the van.

This morning I learned bringing my batteries into the hotel was a good idea because I used one to charge my almost dead phone.

It's almost 10:00am and the power is still off. The map shows fewer people without power and the estimated restoration time of 1:59pm.

I had Kachava for breakfast but I really want coffee. I can't make coffee without electricity nor can I go somewhere for coffee because the van is in the shop (long story).

My daughter, Nikki, lives a mile away and has power. She's off work today and could come get me but I'm on the fourth floor and taking the elevator isn't an option.

I'd do the stairs in an emergency but I can't risk messing up my knee for anything less than an all-out emergency.

As for grab-n-go foods, I have some Crunchmaster crackers and half a jar of Biscoff Cookie butter. I suppose I can survive off of that for a few hours.

I'm really wishing I made those hard boiled eggs yesterday.

It's unusually cold for south Florida - low 40's during the night and 47 right now. It's a bit nippy in the hotel room but It's better than dealing with the heat.

I've dealt with the cold weather in the van but never imagined having to deal with it in a hotel.

Many years ago I decided to make life an adventure - because it is.

Who'da thunk losing power in a 4th floor hotel room would be one of those adventures?
