A Trip to Key Biscayne Gets Cut Short

Yesterday, Nikki was off work so we went to Key Biscayne to see what we could see.

We visit Key Biscayne most every year. It’s just minutes from Miami, across the Rickenbacker Causeway.

We always enjoy the drive, the conversation, and the views.

The drive through Miami is a bit of a maze with twisty roads, tall buildings, and confusing exits.

There’s a new road being built directly above the current one. Only the pillars are there but, by next year, the new road should be up and running.

All these high-rise roads remind me of the Jetsons (minus the flying cars).

On the island, at Hobie Island Beach Park, we assess my arthritic knee situation. My knee is feeling pretty good so we hop out of the van and head to the beach.

There are more people than we usually see at the beach. But we realize it’s Presidents’ Day and more people are off work and kids are out of school.

Nikki and I smile as we watch a dog and its human running and romping around a palm tree.

As the dog runs on his long, orange leash, it wraps around the human’s feet and almost pulls him to the ground. But the human makes a quick recovery.

That’s gonna be one tuckered pooch!

Soon, a familiar nagging congestion, burning eyes, and cough start to set in. It’s the first sign of an MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) reaction. I’ve learned the hard way that if I don’t leave the area quickly… my symptoms will get much worse.

The culprit? The suntan lotion - that other people were wearing - is too much for my system to handle today.

But before we leave the beach… one last looksie…

The beach is a bust but we may as well take a spin around the island.

As we drive, my coughing fit continues. It often lasts a while after an exposure.

Between coughs, Nikki and I talk about what we’d do if either of us lived here. There are always golf carts roaming the streets. I would definitely be tooling around the island in a decked out golf cart!

The end of the road in Key Biscayne is Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. We opt out of going to the park because we explored it a few years ago and don’t want to pay to go in.

MCS may have cut our trip short but it has no control over our happiness. We still enjoy several hours of our day together.

The reason I spend winter in south Florida is to spend time with Nikki. Where we go, what we do, or how we do it isn’t the important part.
