My Take on Personal Blogging - The Best Rule is No Rules

When I saw Loren's 'Blogging: No List, No Schedule' post I clicked to read without hesitation.

This prompted me to write my own post about my blogging experience and writing style 😊

Prior to my current ConnieSue.me blog…

I had a personal blog (Simply Connie) for almost 10 years where I wrote about my travels and van life.

Along with the personal blog, I had a few websites that I earned my living from. Spoiler alert! It wasn't enough to live on but it helped keep the wheels rollin'.

My struggles with the websites…

Coming up with content to write about, doing keyword research, adding a click-worthy title / meta description / excerpt, promoting on social media, and hoping for the best had become a major chore.

I tried to follow the Guru Rules for making a successful website. This was a lot of work for a little gain and I eventually squashed the websites.

Turning my focus solely on the Simply Connie personal blog, I placed affiliate links within the content.

I didn’t place advertisements on the blog because they drive me nuts and didn’t want my Readers to deal with that!

Deciding to retire the Simply Connie blog…

There came a time when I realized I was living my life to blog about it rather than living my life to live it.

The behind the scenes tasks of running a WordPress blog was also wearing on my nerves. Sometimes the administrative tasks took longer than writing a blog post.

In 2025, after lengthy soul-searching, I felt a clean-break was needed and made a farewell post on my decade-long blog, completely shutting it down the following month.

All is not lost! I always saved a PDF copy of every post and have the Wordpress backup file.

I just want to write. Period!

Dealing with the back-end of a website, researching keywords, making sure to format the post / title / etc correctly, managing social media, and making a plan for what my next post will be about are not things I want to see on my Blogging To Do List.

Honestly, I don’t even want a To Do List. I’m not one to make plans any more than necessary. I barely plan my travel adventures… why should I do it for a blog?!

My Blogging Style…

I typically operate life outside of the box. But if a label is required, you could say my writing style is Connie-style.

Since starting this blog, I write when the mood strikes - about whatever’s on my mind at the time. Most posts are text based while others include photos.

I don't concern myself with following any rules - other than my own totally flexible, willy-nilly, Connie-style way of blogging.

Some posts may be sprawled out one way, other posts might be done differently... but all posts are written from the heart, on the fly, from the joy of writing and sharing my thoughts and stories.

Parting thoughts…

I don't have a conventional blogging style - but it's the writing that brings me joy, not the style.

Until next time,
Connie 🌼
