Sometimes You Have to Pick Your Poison

It’s been too darned humid for more than a week. A couple days ago, the heat and storms decided to join the party.

This is not a fun weather mix.

The past few years, I’ve noticed…

The humid climate has taken a toll on me. I can’t seem to tolerate it like I used to. My lungs just throw a tizzy.

Adding high temperatures into the mix only makes it worse.

Thunderstorms and rain never used to bother me. But somewhere along the way, stormy weather stopped being something I enjoyed from my window-side view and became something I braced for.

I just don’t like storms - especially when I’m in the van.

Finding a place to shelter can be a challenge…

The campground I’m staying at has 2 bathhouses and an office with a basement.

If the storm happens after the office closes for the day, the only options are the 2 bathhouses.

One bathhouse is off-limits for me because there’s an air freshener. I can barely walk past when someone opens the door, let alone go inside and wait out a storm. It’s a severe MCS reaction just waiting to happen.

The other bathhouse has 2 private shower areas and 2 private restrooms. The rooms are small and poorly ventilated. In theory, I could wait out a storm there. In reality, I’d be at the mercy of whatever products the next person through the door happens to be wearing - and there’s a good chance it could set off an MCS reaction.

In cases like these, it’s a pick your poison kind of thing. Neither is a good outcome and I’ve gambled with both scenarios. But I tend to gamble more on the weather than I do with MCS.

All this to say…

I chose a different poison.

I’m at a hotel for a few days… giving my lungs a break from the humidity and my sanity a much needed rest.

And the best part… I’m finally getting my laundry done! IYKYK or check out my Wrestling with Van Life Laundry post.
