Realizing I’m Not Invincible

The extreme heat and humidity let up last week but it was followed by a couple rounds of severe thunderstorms.

One night, I spent an hour in the bathroom ready to hit the deck because tornado warnings were blasting on my phone. In my hotel room, I figured the safest place would be the tub. My room has a sofa with big pillows so I grabbed one to put over my head, if needed.

Thankfully the storms all passed without incident - other than the wear-n-tear on my nerves.

July has been a bit much this year…

The warm July temperatures would be tolerable if it weren’t for the cotton-pickin’ humidity.

I’m glad I decided to extend my hotel stay instead of going back to the campground in my un-air-conditioned van.

Next week’s forecast… humid with temps in the 90s and Feels Like temps over 100🔥

My biggest challenge right now…

It wasn’t always like this. I’ve spent many winters in the van in south Florida and summers in northern Illinois with no ill effects from the heat and humidity.

But I’m not as invincible as I once thought.

Over the past few years, the humidity has been harder on my lungs. Sleep isn’t as restful and daytime activities wear me down quicker. And that’s on top of the normal predicament of everything being sticky.

A simple task like opening a new plastic trash bag can become a major battle. Trying to keep the plastic from sticking to my skin turns a normally easygoing lady into a wildly grumpy woman who could snort fire and shoot laser beams from her eyeballs at anyone who dares to laugh at the situation.

The bottom line… it’s still too humid to be at a campground in the van.

Parting thoughts…

Hotel checkout day is tomorrow but I don’t have a definite plan on where I’m going from here. Why hurry, right?! 😅

I’ll most likely figure out the details this afternoon. I’m kinda leaning towards an extended stay hotel - even though the nearest one is 50 minutes away from here.

Van life as I know it has changed. But the way I see it, change is just part of the adventure.
