My 1989 New Year's Resolution and Why I Still Keep It

Around this time every year, people start making resolutions for the new year.

I used to be fanatical about making resolutions and forcing myself to stick to them... which lasted about 3 weeks into the new year.

By the end of January, guilt and shame pulsed thru my soul as each well intended goal fell to the wayside.

The one and only New Year's resolution I ever kept was the one I made in 1989 to never make another New Year's resolution!

I still have goals and do things to improve myself and my life. I just don't follow societal norms when it comes to making them nor do I wait until January 1 to make them official.

What I no longer do is force myself to make or keep goals - because forcing doesn't work! You can't force a square peg into a round hole and goals are no different.

Truth is, nothing needs to be forced. Growth should feel like breathing... not like holding your breath until everything works out your way.

Why do we spend so much time trying to fix ourselves every January 1? We aren't broken machines in need of an annual overhaul or projects that need to be finished. We're human beings who learn, grow, and make adjustments as we experience life.

So here’s to 2026... a new year with no forced expectations.

I’m just going to be me - learning and growing as I experience this charming little mess called Life.

How about you?

Connie 🌼
