Every Screenshot Was a Reminder
I’m so glad I came to the hotel this past Sunday! The heat advisory that was issued late last week quickly changed to an outright warning for Sunday afternoon thru Wednesday night.
I have a habit of taking screenshots of my weather app. It’s interesting to look back at these but, this time, I think my excessive screenshots were reminders that I made the right choice coming to the hotel.
Here’s a little on the heat…
On Sunday afternoon, it was getting a little warm by the time I moved to the hotel. Surprisingly, I did well and got into my air conditioned room before the downright wicked heat arrived.
By Monday afternoon, northwest Illinois transformed into a sauna.
I’ve been in the van when the thermometer crept over 100… but with this week’s high humidity and Feels Like temps, being in the van would have been wildly uncomfortable… not to mention dangerous.
There wasn’t even a reprieve during the night.
It just didn’t cool down!
My ideal nighttime temps are in the 50’s or 60’s - not the 70’s or 80’s with Feels Like temps in the 90’s 🔥
The Call of Nature came thru in the wee hours of the morning. I usually do my thing and go right back to sleep… knowing if I grab my phone I’ll be dinking around for an hour or more.
But I needed to know what the weather app said! I couldn’t stop my hand from grabbing the phone.
On the other side of my hotel window, the air was too steamy and stifling for my blood.
If I were in the van, I’d have been one heck of a cranky woman!
Tuesday wasn’t much better.
I sent a screenshot to Nikki and she asked if I was secretly in Florida 😅
So I had to see what her weather looked like…
Nikki’s south Florida weather looked better than mine! Not by much but better is better… even with her being an hour ahead of me over in Eastern time.
Meanwhile at the hotel…
I’m staying cool, only going outside to run errands and get out for a bit.
Since this is not an extended stay hotel, cooking in the room is not allowed. My room has a mini-fridge and microwave but I can’t bring my stove or other cooking appliances in without risking getting kicked out of the hotel.
But 10+ years of van life prepared me for this! I simply eat food that doesn’t require a stove… with an occasional trip to one of my favorite carryout places 😉
Parting Thoughts…
The heat warning ended last night. It’s Thursday morning and it’s still pretty warm and sticky out there.
The weather looks to be warm, humid, and/or rainy for a while… not my idea of fun. So I extended my stay at the hotel for another week.
I have no idea what I’m doing come check-out day. I’ll probably figure out a plan soon… maybe…
