Coffee, Doodles, and Mrs E

I needed more coffee, so I wandered down to the hotel front desk to pick up a few more coffee packets.

Leaning up to the counter waiting for my packets, a gentle voice behind me asked if I had a daughter who went to Tri-County School.

I turned and my mind raced because I knew those eyes. Without warning, I blurted out “Mrs E?!?”

She was Nikki’s sixth grade teacher. One of her favorites (and mine). She encouraged kids to be themselves… whether they fit in with the crowd or not.

Mrs E let Nikki doodle in class instead of sending a note home about it. Many of her teachers sent improvement needed notes home saying “Nikki doodles during class.” But Mrs E sent notes about how detailed the drawings were for her age.

That was back in 2007. Mrs E and her husband are living in Texas now… and she still has some of Nikki’s drawings!

We’re both originally from this area, but I live out of a van with no fixed place that I call home, and Mrs E lives in Texas. Yet somehow we’re both standing in the same hotel lobby at the same moment in time.
