A Hotel Trial That Didn’t Work Out

When trying a new hotel or campground, my general rule is to stay just 1 or 2 nights. Some places don’t give refunds once you’ve paid. By staying 1 or 2 nights, it’s no big deal if it doesn’t work out.

My track record is pretty good but sometimes I end up leaving because I just don’t like the place or, more likely, because of my MCS.

I booked a new hotel…

The extended stay hotel was in Rockford IL.

The front desk guy was very friendly. I enjoyed talking to him and had high hopes that I’d found a new place to add to my “Places to Stay” list.

When I entered my room…

It felt very unwelcoming. Granted, the room looked like it was straight out of the 1950s but the unwelcoming feeling wasn’t its looks… it was just a feeling in the air itself.

There was also a slight musty odor hanging in the air. Thankfully, the windows opened so I was able to let some fresh, very humid air inside.

I also pulled out my cute little air purifier and put her on high speed.

By bedtime…

I wasn’t thrilled about being there. That nagging, deep down feeling hadn’t subsided.

But I wasn’t doing too badly, MCS wise. So I went to bed, deciding I’d deal with the nagging feeling in the morning.

The bed was very comfy. But soon… I started itching everywhere! I knew it wasn’t bedbugs because I always check for that.

Whatever the sheets were laundered in caused my skin to crawl - literally.

My eyes got scratchy, a nasty headache began growing, and my ears had a weird buzzing noise.

The thoughts racing thru my head…

MCS can suck 💥

I should think about leaving but I’m parked in the back lot 🙁

This area feels semi-sketchy. There’s no way I’m packing up and going outside to leave in the middle of the bloomin’ night! 😳

That’s what I get for not going to bed until the midnight hour 🙄

If all else fails, I can sleep in the 1950s recliner.

Somehow I fell asleep (in bed) for a few hours…

By early dawn, my head and heart were pounding and my body felt like every cell was going spastic.

My point of no return symptoms were starting to set in… tingly lips, bloody nose, nausea.

I could even taste the air.

Long story short…

I dreaded the thought of talking to someone while feeling like crap… but I needed to make sure I had a place to stay.

So I called the hotel I checked out of yesterday morning and they have a long-term spot. I was also able to check-in at 9am this morning!

When I left the hotel in Rockford, no one was in the office yet so I put my keycards in the slot… not expecting a refund for the second night.

They called later and I explained why I left. Surprisingly, they refunded the second night without me asking.

Parting thoughts…

I do pretty well managing and co-existing with MCS. But sometimes it just doesn't work out.

It’ll take a few days to recuperate but it won't stop me from seeking the next adventure… when I’m up for it.
